Martela has local environmental committees to assess how Martela processes meet the local environmental objectives.

The environmental assessment include statutory and other authority requirements as well as environmental views of external and internal stakeholders. Extent, severity and duration of impact of environmental objectives are evaluated as well as likelihood of environmental consideration and cause-effect.

We have developed our manufacturing processes and operating network to enable us to reduce our energy consumption and minimise emissions and risks to the environment.

Our product packages are reusable, either as packaging material, recycled material or energy resource. Waste from our manufacturing process is sorted for further processing. Our aim is to create furniture that not only can be used for a long time but also allows for safe disposal to minimize lifecycle effect on nature.

 

Production Technology

We have concentrate in assembly and logistics functions. The  Nummela logistics centre focuses on the final assembly of new products and the remanufacture of recycled products. The assembly of upholstery components takes place at Martela’s own plant in Poland, and table top and storage components are manufactured at Kidex Oy, Martela’s production facility located in Kitee, Finland. Material, component and subassemblies are produced using established supplier network. The manufacturing is based on customer orders. Product program defines delivery time for the products based on storage, steering and manufacturing methods required.

To ensure delivery accuracy we use best available production technology, equipment and machinery as well as close monitoring of inventory and predictive maintenance of equipment. All these factors are needed to enable flexible and fast manufacturing model

When creating subcontracting chain, particular attention is given to following factors:

  • ability to produce quality
  • short set-up times
  • flexibility in changing situations
  • low need for maintenance
  • environmental aspects
     

Our Environmental goals:

  • Waste prevention with the demand-driven Martela Lifecycle model for customer
  • Waste prevention with the design of technically durable, classically formed products with optimized material usage
  • Reduction of the amount of waste with careful handling of materials and components, using of reusable packaging material and with effective sorting of waste
  • Efficient recycling methods for used office furniture
  • Preparation of used furniture for reuse by remanufacturing and effective recycling of the unusable furniture
  • Minimizing energy consumption and using renewable energy sources

 

Transportation and Packages

We use reusable and recyclable solutions (pallets, pallet sleeves, corner guards, boxes, trolleys) in the transport and storage of production materials. These transportation and storage materials are returned to component and raw material suppliers and partners. Raw material and component packaging materials are reused in packing and loading products whenever possible.

All our packaging materials are recyclable, whether as material or energy waste. Packaging materials are used efficiently with consideration to distance and conditions of transport. Transport routes are optimized to be as energy efficient and environmentally friendly as possible.

We service and renew our transport equipment regularly. It is important to us that our drivers have environmentally friendly driving manners. We monitor fuel consumption and ensure that vehicles are used with as low emissions as possible.

Since 1998, Martela has met its statutory packaging waste producer responsibility obligations via Suomen Pakkauskierrätys RINKI Oy (previously the Environmental Register of Packaging PYR Ltd) in Finland and FTI Förpacknings & Tidnings Insamlingen in Sweden.

Sorting of Waste

All in our production facilities, where local recycling services are available, waste is sorted by material to wood, energy, cardboard, metal and plastic fractions. In addition data protection documents, mixed and hazardous waste are collected separately.


 

Energy Usage

Martela Processes are not energy intensive. Energy is used mainly for heating the properties to be used. Electricity is mainly used for lighting, ventilation, compressed air and for operation of equipment used in the production facilities.
